Improving the appearance of my garden in winter

I have a garden that is very water efficient, so it looks great in the warmer months, but it can become a little overgrown and wild in the colder months. I might not spend as much time out there in winter, but I still like it to look good. I have been working on the garden design to help it look good all year round, and I have found that with the right plant selection and preparation, the garden can look great throughout the year. This blog has tips for other homeowners who are looking to improve the appearance of their garden when the weather gets wet.

What Will YOU Do at Home in the Event of a Fire?

by Paul Harrison

Do you have a fire plan in place at your home? In particular, have you discussed with other members of your family what will happen in the unfortunate event a fire breaks out? What are the main things you need to consider as you make these crucial preparations?

Dangers All Around

In a modern home there are many different ways that a fire could break out. A faulty electrical circuit could trigger an issue without warning. Somebody could leave something unattended on the stove that catches fire. It's not sufficient simply to have a fire alarm. You need to know what you should do in the event that something breaks out.

Different Types of Extinguisher

Before attempting to tackle a fire with an extinguisher you have to determine what type of fire it is. This is because using the wrong type of extinguisher can actually make things worse.

Fire extinguishers come in six different types and are usually colour-coded to help you recognise the difference. The conventional water extinguishers are all red and these are recommended when dealing with carbon-based material fires such as paper, textiles, plastics and wood. If you need to deal with a fire involving combustible or flammable liquids such as paint or petrol, you will need to use a foam-based extinguisher, which is typically blue. If, on the other hand, the fire is due to an electrical fault, you need to be very careful and only use a white fire extinguisher with dry chemical powder if the source is still active. Certain other types of extinguishers can also be useful in these situations including carbon dioxide (black), vaporising liquid (yellow) and wet chemical (oatmeal).

The All-Round Alternative

You may think that it is challenging to have all these different types of extinguisher, so a good all-round choice to have is the dry chemical powder version. This can be used to put out a wide variety of typical house fires including those caused by faulty electrical equipment.

Training the Family

Always ensure that your fire extinguishers are placed in easy to access locations, especially close to areas that are more at risk, like the kitchen. Ensure that all family members know where they are and also how to use them. Remember the acronym PASS. PULL out the pin from the top, AIM the nozzle at the lowest point of the fire, SQUEEZE the extinguisher handle and SWEEP the extinguisher and spray back and forth, side to side, across the base of the fire.
