I have a garden that is very water efficient, so it looks great in the warmer months, but it can become a little overgrown and wild in the colder months. I might not spend as much time out there in winter, but I still like it to look good. I have been working on the garden design to help it look good all year round, and I have found that with the right plant selection and preparation, the garden can look great throughout the year. This blog has tips for other homeowners who are looking to improve the appearance of their garden when the weather gets wet.

Shade sails are a great way to protect extensive areas. You can fix them over pools and playgrounds that are otherwise in the baking sun. Here are some considerations to bear in mind when selecting your sails.
The Target Shade Area
First, work out what spots you want shaded and at what times of the day. As the sun moves across the sky, it will strike the sail from different angles, and so the shaded area underneath will shift. Thus, if providing afternoon shade is your priority, place the sail in an appropriate position to deliver it.
Remember that you can combine multiple sails, aligning several in a row or arranging them differently. This versatility helps, as you can cover virtually any area. If you want a spot to remain shaded for many hours, simply use larger or more sails. You have a lot of freedom because you can connect the sails to poles concreted into the ground or nearby building structures.
Be open-minded when judging which areas require shade. For example, what will happen when the sun travels a different route across the sky in winter? Will the target area be too shady and cold, or will it get a touch of warming sunshine? Remember when covering a pool that water without direct sunlight will be colder than if sunlight strikes it. The Material
Another thing to research is the sail material. Each product will specify how much UV light it blocks, allowing you to comply with any regulations set down by the government or business preferences. The sails are usually comprised of woven polypropylene or PVC. If you want a waterproof cover, you could use PVC. Just angle the sails enough, so the rain flows away and doesn't pool on top. Consider the spot where the water will hit the ground. Will it be able to drain away safely?
Polypropylene sails can also provide some protection from rain, but they typically let the water filter through. These breathable sails also allow for breeze flow, making them more pleasing to some people. You won't have to worry about the sails collecting water puddles and becoming damaged. In any case, all shade sails are set at an angle to prevent water from collecting. If you set them up to be taut, this further encourages water to roll off. Look into shade structures near you for more information.
