Improving the appearance of my garden in winter

I have a garden that is very water efficient, so it looks great in the warmer months, but it can become a little overgrown and wild in the colder months. I might not spend as much time out there in winter, but I still like it to look good. I have been working on the garden design to help it look good all year round, and I have found that with the right plant selection and preparation, the garden can look great throughout the year. This blog has tips for other homeowners who are looking to improve the appearance of their garden when the weather gets wet.

Beautiful and Practical Features to Include When You're Getting Custom Kitchen Cabinets

by Paul Harrison

Getting custom kitchen cabinets means being able to have cabinets and cupboards created to your exacting taste, and also being able to maximize space in what might otherwise be an awkward layout in your kitchen. No matter your reasons for getting custom cabinets, you want to take the opportunity to create pieces that are beautiful yet practical, so note a few features you don't want to overlook when discussing your options with your cabinetmaker.

1. Glass fronts

Glass fronts, at least on some of your cabinets, can open up a small kitchen and give you a chance to display your decorative platters, nice wine glasses, and the like. If you want the open look of glass but prefer not to see what's in the cabinets, opt for a slight frosting that will block the view but also bounce around light and make the space seem brighter.

2. Oversized, exposed hinges

Very often kitchen cabinets will have small, hidden hinges that don't interfere with the look of the cabinet face. However, exposed and oversized hinges can break up the look of wood cabinets and also add a more rustic or old-world feeling to your cabinets. They can also create a more modern look, if you choose simple hinges in a stainless steel.

3. Fitted to your small appliances

When having cabinets made for your kitchen in particular, you can also have them made for your appliances in particular. If you're always struggling to get a waffle iron or oversized crock-pot into a cabinet, have your cabinetmaker take measurements of your favorite small appliances and create shelving and cupboards for them in particular.

4. Decorative space

While your cabinets and cupboards are typically meant to store items you need in the kitchen, it's good to talk to your cabinetmaker about how you can have decorative space as well. This might mean an open cabinet or two where you can put up a decorative platter or a piece of art on a small easel, or even add some flowers in a vase. This type of simple touch can make your kitchen seem homier and more inviting and relaxing.

5. Mixing the surface materials

You might find that the same material used for cupboards can get overwhelming and downright dull, especially in large kitchen. Ask your cabinetmaker about mixing up the surface materials; this might mean adding the same tile used for your backsplash on the front of a cabinet or two, or adding a crown molding around the cabinets in a contrasting shade for more visual appeal.
