I have a garden that is very water efficient, so it looks great in the warmer months, but it can become a little overgrown and wild in the colder months. I might not spend as much time out there in winter, but I still like it to look good. I have been working on the garden design to help it look good all year round, and I have found that with the right plant selection and preparation, the garden can look great throughout the year. This blog has tips for other homeowners who are looking to improve the appearance of their garden when the weather gets wet.

Sometimes it is necessary to remove a tree from your garden. You will be able to use some of the wood as firewood, if you have a use for it. Before you simply ask the tree specialist to remove the bulk of the wood, consider some unusual ways to use the trunk of the tree.
Arrange for the tree specialist to cut the trunk into sections of different thicknesses so that you can use them in the following ways.
Hanging shelf bird feeder
To make an effective, simple birdfeeder for your garden, you will need one cross section of the tree trunk about three centimetres wide. Use some cup hooks or nails to attach nylon rope or thin chain to three or four evenly spaced spots on the piece of wood, so that it can be suspended as a flat shelf. Use the rope or chain to hang the shelf bird feeder from a tree in your garden. Place fruit, seeds or other food on the shelf to attract the birds.
Informal seating for your garden
You may have a spot in your garden where you like to sit on occasion, or you may have a barbecue pit around which you would like to have some seating. Instead of using traditional garden furniture that may seem to be a little formal, one option you can pursue is to use logs cut from the trunk of the tree as stools. Each piece should be about sixty centimetres high. If they are not all uniform, or even at all straight, this will simply add to their attraction as quirky alternative seating. You just need to make sure that the bottom and top surfaces are level.
These seats can be placed wherever you choose in your garden. On their own, they will be an interesting, natural feature that will blend with the rest of your garden. If you want to make a real feature of these pieces of timber as seats, you could put cushions on top of each, which will also make them more comfortable.
Incidental tables
It is always useful to have small tables or stools on your patio where you can put your coffee cup, or plate of snacks. For these, you will need some pieces from the straightest part of the trunk. They should be about seventy centimetres high. You can sand the sides and top of these pieces to give them a little bit of class and use these as incidental tables.
