Improving the appearance of my garden in winter

I have a garden that is very water efficient, so it looks great in the warmer months, but it can become a little overgrown and wild in the colder months. I might not spend as much time out there in winter, but I still like it to look good. I have been working on the garden design to help it look good all year round, and I have found that with the right plant selection and preparation, the garden can look great throughout the year. This blog has tips for other homeowners who are looking to improve the appearance of their garden when the weather gets wet.

Privacy Screens: The Different Types You Could Choose

by Paul Harrison

If you are looking to enhance the privacy on your property but do not want to install solid fencing, then you should consider a privacy screen. Privacy screens are decorative structures that are designed to obstruct views from the outside into your living space, whether this living space is a gazebo, a patio, a deck, a garden and more. One of the oldest types of privacy screens were used by the Japanese. This privacy screen is referred to as a shoji screen, and it is made of rice paper that is secured onto a timber frame. Thus, you can see the silhouette of someone through a shoji screen but you cannot see a clear image of them. In this day and age, there is a wide assortment of materials that can be used to create privacy screens depending on your individual needs as well as your personal budget. Below are some of the different types of privacy screens that you could consider installing on your property.

Glass privacy screens

Over the years, glass has become a popular option for homeowners looking for a counterparty design when constructing a privacy screen. Some people may be under the wrong assumption that glass is too fragile to be used as a privacy screen, especially in areas that are prone to high impact due to heavy traffic. The truth is the type of glass that is used to make these privacy screens is put through heat treatments to strengthen it.

To create privacy, you have the option of either frosting the glass or opting for etched glass. With frosted glass, you make the design on how opaque or transparent you would like the glass to be. With etched glass, you decide what patterns or designs you would like etched into the glass.

Lattice privacy screens

Another popular type of privacy screen is the lattice screen. This screen is characterised by arranging narrow strips of material to create a decorative pattern with spaces in between the strips. There are an array of materials that can be used to create a lattice privacy screen. One of the more popular options is timber lattice screens, but you can also choose to use PVC, vinyl and more.

Lattice screens are ideal for two reasons. Firstly, the decorative pattern may have spaces but it is difficult to see directly onto the area that you would like to keep secluded. Secondly, the spaces in the latticework ensure that your exterior living space is getting adequate ventilation as the breeze can pass through the privacy screen.
