I have a garden that is very water efficient, so it looks great in the warmer months, but it can become a little overgrown and wild in the colder months. I might not spend as much time out there in winter, but I still like it to look good. I have been working on the garden design to help it look good all year round, and I have found that with the right plant selection and preparation, the garden can look great throughout the year. This blog has tips for other homeowners who are looking to improve the appearance of their garden when the weather gets wet.

As the long nights start to draw in, you might find your bedroom feeling a little chilly. If you're not keen on turning the heating up any further, or you simply want to invite a cosier feel into the room, then this is the article for you.
With a few simple new additions to your bedroom, you'll find it transformed from somewhere cold and uninviting, to a warm, reassuring haven you won't want to leave in the morning. Think luxurious soft furnishings, thick, fluffy blankets and plenty of twinkling lights.
Put up thick curtains
For maximum warmth, choose curtains made from a thick, heavy fabric. This will keep out any cool draughts and is especially important if your windows aren't double glazed. Curtains with thermal lining are made up of two or three layers of fabric which trap heat and make the curtains look fuller. Add a blackout layer too if your window looks out onto a light source like a street lamp. This will add even more insulation and ensure your room is completely pitch black at night, making it easier to sleep.
Add extra throws and blankets
You might not want to purchase a new duvet for winter — although duvets with higher tog ratings are warmer, they're usually far too hot during summer and too bulky to store easily. Investing in a range of throws and blankets is a much better option as it allows you to add and remove layers as the temperature changes. Choose a fleece blanket for maximum softness, perfect for snuggling up at the end of a long day. A thick woven blanket is perfect for adding loads of warmth and ideal for draping over your bed while you sleep.
Hang decorative lights
Bright, twinkling lights are a wonderful way to combat the miserable, dark evenings. Safer than candles, battery-powered fairy lights are a great option. Since they don't plug in, you can position them anywhere in the room without dangerous wires trailing around. You could hang one set around a mirror and another along a shelf. Choose lights with an automatic timer so that you don't have to bother getting up to switch them on and off. White lights look simple and classy while rainbow coloured lights are festive and fun.
Add a soft rug
If your bedroom floor is made of a cool material like wood or tile, then a thick, soft rug is a must. It'll keep your room warmer, and add to the cosy, wintery appearance. Position the rug close to your bed so that you never have to step barefoot onto an ice cold floor again.
