Improving the appearance of my garden in winter

I have a garden that is very water efficient, so it looks great in the warmer months, but it can become a little overgrown and wild in the colder months. I might not spend as much time out there in winter, but I still like it to look good. I have been working on the garden design to help it look good all year round, and I have found that with the right plant selection and preparation, the garden can look great throughout the year. This blog has tips for other homeowners who are looking to improve the appearance of their garden when the weather gets wet.

4 Ways Motorised Shutters Can Help Prevent Burglaries

by Paul Harrison

Motorised shutters are great for convenience, and they can also prove a real boon to home security. Here are just four ways going motorised can make your home more secure against potential burglars.

1. You Can Stop the House Looking Empty

Your automatic shutters will come with a remote, so you'll be able to lower them while you're chilling on the sofa if you so wish. However, they'll also come with a programmable monitor, so you'll be able to set your shutters to rise or descend at certain points throughout the day.

This is great for security since potential burglars will often check out houses they think are currently unoccupied in order to find easy targets. If they notice that your shutters don't stay in the same position during the day or over a few days, they are less likely to target your house. This can work well if you leave the house empty each day, but it's particularly useful when you go away on holiday.

2. You'll Achieve Complete Coverage

Motorized shutters need to be fitted exactly around each window in order to work properly, with links laid down to ensure perfect lifting and falling. What this means is that your windows will be totally covered when the shutters are down. With manual shutters, it's often possible to see a little bit of what's behind them through the odd gap; with motorised shutters, the interior of your home will be safe from prying eyes.

3. Motorised Shutters Cannot be Lifted

When it comes to security, manual shutters have one glaring weakness: they can be lifted from the outside with relative ease. This doesn't just mean that burglars will be able to see inside to find any expensive items; it also means that the shutters can be lifted to present an easy point of entry once the window has been shattered.

Motorised shutters are different. They cannot be lifted from the outside; trying to do so would be like trying to open an electric garage door by hand. Some manufacturers even offer motorized rollers with stiffer links if this is a particular concern.

4. You Can Drop Your Shutters from Afar

Let's say you've left the home without remembering to drop the shutters or program a drop or rise later in the day; you could even have simply forgotten whether you did so or not. With manual shutters, you'd have to sit there and worry, but this is not always the case with motorised ones. Many companies have developed apps that link your smartphone to your shutters. You can check the current status and make changes from wherever you are in the world.
