I have a garden that is very water efficient, so it looks great in the warmer months, but it can become a little overgrown and wild in the colder months. I might not spend as much time out there in winter, but I still like it to look good. I have been working on the garden design to help it look good all year round, and I have found that with the right plant selection and preparation, the garden can look great throughout the year. This blog has tips for other homeowners who are looking to improve the appearance of their garden when the weather gets wet.

If you're planning on having a new home built, you'll want to ensure you include all the best features right from the start rather than assuming you can easily retrofit or replace items in that new home down the road. This includes smart home technology, meaning computerized gadgets that help you control many of your home features remotely or automatically. Note a few pieces of smart home technology that you may want to include in your new home design and why they can be so convenient and beneficial.
1. Hot-water heater
If you're away from home for the day, there is no reason for your hot-water heater to keep running and wasting electricity, but you may not want to shut it off completely. A remote app can give you control over the temperature of the hot-water heater so you can turn it down as needed during the day but then turn it back up when you're headed back home. This way, you have hot water waiting for you when you arrive.
2. Automatic garage-door opener
Many garage-door openers require you to tap a clicker or a key fob, but this can be awkward when it's late at night and dark out or if you simply misplace the clicker. New technology for garage doors includes a sensor you can place inside your car and that then communicates with the garage door. When the car is running inside the garage or approaches it from the street, the door automatically opens. When the car is shut off while in the garage, the door automatically closes. These devices will usually still have some type of clicker or remote so that you can override the sensor as needed.
3. Smart ovens
With today's smart ovens, which you might include in a new home design, the standard oven that just sets a temperature and buzzes when the time is finished may seem terribly outdated. A smart oven can allow you to remotely turn it on and off or adjust the temperature, a perfect choice for when you want to start dinner while still at the office. Many smart ovens will also come with sensors that allow you to check the actual temperature of the dish you're cooking so you can adjust the temperature or time of the stove as needed. Since these ovens may need more electrical power than a standard stove, it's good to plan ahead for the installation of a smart oven when planning your new home design.
