Improving the appearance of my garden in winter

I have a garden that is very water efficient, so it looks great in the warmer months, but it can become a little overgrown and wild in the colder months. I might not spend as much time out there in winter, but I still like it to look good. I have been working on the garden design to help it look good all year round, and I have found that with the right plant selection and preparation, the garden can look great throughout the year. This blog has tips for other homeowners who are looking to improve the appearance of their garden when the weather gets wet.

Flexible 2017 Kitchen Design Trends

by Paul Harrison

One of the most functional rooms in any house, kitchens are also frequently the hub of a real home. Modern households will often use their kitchen as a place for socialising, looking after children and doing laundry as much as for food preparation. As such, contemporary kitchen design is now as multi-functional as possible with plenty of touches which allow for versatility. Of course, a new kitchen installation needs to be stylish as well. What are the leading trends in kitchen design ideas and how can they be incorporated into the average Australian home?

  • Self-Painted Tiles

One of the best on-trend ways to add a personal touch to your kitchen's décor is to paint your own tiles. Don't worry! You don't need to paint all of your kitchen's tiles to get the look. Many tile makers will incorporate your design ideas into a batch of normal tiles which means that you can use them for touches of individuality here and there. Use a glaze to protect them and install them just as you would any other tile with adhesive and grout. This kitchen trend is perfect if you have an arty outlook on life you'd like to represent.

  • Portable Kitchen Islands

Kitchen islands have been fashionable for a number of years. The ability to work or eat from an island from any side means that you can achieve a great deal of versatility. However, the expected trend to take off in the current period is for increased functionality thanks to the ability to move them. This means being able to shift an island to another part of the room entirely. Portable kitchen islands should be either set on runners, so they can be pushed back against a wall to create a conventional cabinet and work surface combination, or on wheels. The wheeled variety may be held securely in position by brakes, but should be able to be moved to just about anywhere you need them in the kitchen. The best ones can even be plumbed into water and electrical connections, if wanted.

  • Home Water Dispensers

Do away with your kettle and the need to boil water from cold in pans for vegetables! With a home water dispenser, you get so much more than a tap. Able to be fitted to virtually any work surface in a kitchen design, home water dispensers produce near boiling water when needed, but will also allow chilled water to flow, too. This means you don't need a kettle for hot drinks or a jug of water in the fridge that constantly needs refilling. Connected to the mains supply they are quick, efficient and look very stylish, too.
