Improving the appearance of my garden in winter

I have a garden that is very water efficient, so it looks great in the warmer months, but it can become a little overgrown and wild in the colder months. I might not spend as much time out there in winter, but I still like it to look good. I have been working on the garden design to help it look good all year round, and I have found that with the right plant selection and preparation, the garden can look great throughout the year. This blog has tips for other homeowners who are looking to improve the appearance of their garden when the weather gets wet.

5 Tips for Using Lilies in Your Wedding

by Paul Harrison

Lilies are a perennial favourite for weddings, thanks to their understated elegance and versatility.

1. Know Your Colours

There are lily varieties available in nearly every colour, but not all varieties come in a range of colours. November lilies, for example, are only available in white while most tiger lilies come only in shades of yellow and gold. Asiatic lilies are available in a large range of colours, and calla lilies can be found in white, reds, and yellows. If you desire flowers in any colour but white, make sure that lilies in the desired colour will be available at the time of your wedding.

2. Save Money

The multitude of options with lilies means that there are many cost-saving opportunities. Lilies pair well with green foliage fillers, which can be used to lower the cost of bouquets. Lilies also work well as single flowers, which can be even less expensive than a bouquet. Using lilies in season, as opposed to those forced to flower out of season, is another cost-saving option. Yet another way to save is to opt for native Australian lilies, which also have the benefit of coming in a variety of colours.

3. Prevent Stains

Although beautiful, there is one concern when choosing lilies for a wedding flower. Many varieties of dark yellow or red pollen can cause major stains. This isn't too much of a concern when the lilies are in table centrepieces, but it can be a very large issue for those lilies used in bouquets. Fortunately, you can ask your florist to remove the pollen anthers of any of the lilies that will be used in a bouquet or boutonniere.

4. Mix and Match

Don't be afraid to fill out lily bouquets and centrepieces with different flowers. Lilies pair very well with roses, which gives you an option if you have your heart set on lilies but they aren't available in the colour desired. You can instead opt to pair white lilies with the roses in the colour you want. Different lily varieties also pair well together. For example, combine less expensive calla lilies with a single oversize stargazer lily for a design with high visual impact without too high of a price tag.

5. Stay Simple

One of the wonderful things about lilies is that they shine best when the design isn't overly complicated. For the groom and other men in the wedding party, there is no need for excessive fillers and foliage in the boutonnieres, for example, as a single calla bloom is striking enough on its own. The ladies' bouquets can consist of a single bloom or just a few grouped together, without a bunch of filler and faff.
